Macedonia marks World Heart Day
Skopje, 29 September 2013 (MIA) – Free medical check-ups and runs were held Sunday in Skopje, Stip, Ohrid and Tetovo organised by the Public Health Institute marking the World Heart Day – Sep. 29 under the motto ‘Take the Road to a Healthy Heart.’
Institute’s manager Saban Memeti said that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are on the rise in Macedonia.
He said that the cardiovascular death rate this year is increased to 59.2% compared to 57.2% two years ago. Risk factors for heart disease and stroke include raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables, overweight, obesity and physical inactivity.
State advisor in the Ministry of Health Kiro Salvani said that one of the main causes of cardiovascular diseases is irregular preventive medical check-ups. He said that the programme of the Health Ministry also includes other activities directly connected with cardiovascular diseases and will intensify activities at general practitioners.
World Heart Day was created in 2000 to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading cause of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year and the numbers are rising. sk/14:00
